Saleha's Diamond and Ruby Tiara

The history of this impressive diamond and ruby tiara is unknown; the intricate piece, inset with large rubies, is currently worn by Saleha, the wife of the Sultan of Brunei.

Savoy-Aosta Tiara

Although it is most frequently worn today by Princess Astrid, this diamond floral tiara belongs to her mother-in-law, Archduchess Margherita, who was born a princess of Savoy-Aosta. Margherita often loans the tiara to her sons' wives.

Queen Elisabeth's Diamond Bandeau Tiara

This tiara was made in the early twentieth century for Queen Elisabeth of the Belgians. Queen Paola wears it often. And Princess Mathilde has only worn this tiara once, at her wedding in December of 1999. Queen Paola was given the tiara from her newly-wed husband (in 1965) who inherited it from his grandmother.

Princess Claire's Wedding Tiara

Princess Claire has worn this tiara twice, at her wedding and at Crown Prince Frederik's wedding in May of 2004. Which might indicate that she bought this tiara.

Laurel Wreath Tiara

Made by London jewelers Hennel & Sons in 1912, this tiara includes 631 diamonds in a classic laurel wreath design and can be removed from its frame for use as a necklace. It was a gift from the Belgian nobility to Mathilde for her wedding to Prince Philippe in 1999. Mathilde was of course a member of the Belgian nobility herself prior to marrying the next King of the Belgians.

Diamond and Pearl Tiara

This diamond tiara, made up of scroll elements topped by pearls, is of unknown provenance; although some initially speculated that it might have been loaned to Princess Claire, it seems to have been bought for her.

Habsburg Diamond and Pearl Bandeau

This tiara was worn by Archduchess Francesca on her wedding day in 1993. It is an antique bandeau made of diamond floral motifs with pearls at their centers; according to some sources, the tiara was once owned by Empress Elisabeth "Sissi" of Austria.

Emerald and Diamond Wreath Tiara

Sources suggest that this piece, which is worn both as a tiara and a necklace by Archduchess Francesca von Habsburg, the wife of Archduke Karl (the current head of the House of Habsburg), was originally owned by the Hanoverian royal family but sold at auction. The piece is composed of diamond wreath elements interspersed with large emeralds.

Daisy Diamond Tiara

This tiara is a small bandeau of diamonds set in daisy shapes and enclosed in circles with a scalloped edge, so we will call it the Diamond Daisy Tiara. It was made in 1910, and was a wedding gift from King Harald and Queen Sonja to Mette-Marit.

Cate Blanchett wore either this same tiara or a copy in the movie An Ideal Husband. That movie came out in 1999, 2 years before the wedding, so it may indeed be the same tiara. Knowing that Garrard's provided jewels to the moviemakers and that the Norwegian royal family have used Garrard's as a jeweler in the past, it's reasonable to guess that the royal family purchased this in Britain sometime before the wedding.

Since then, it has become Mette-Marit's most frequently worn tiara.
